Q&A WITH MACY JO HARRISON

Q: What did you get inducted into the hall of fame for?

A: Outstanding Athletic Achievement

Q: When did you start playing soccer and who for?

A: I started playing soccer at the age of 11, for a recreation soccer team in Lake Berryessa, Napa, CA.

Q: What or who inspired you to play soccer? And keep playing over the years?

A: “Honestly, my parents and I didn’t know anything about soccer! My friend’s sister was coaching a recreational soccer team when I was 11 and asked me to play because she needed some more players – the rest is history! I loved playing soccer so much and couldn’t imagine my life without it. My family, especially my parents Michael and Darla, and my close friends encouraged me to keep playing over the years.”

Q: Who is your favorite soccer player and why?

A: “Michelle Akers – legendary player who had Chronic-Fatigue-Syndrome and continued to push through and perform at the highest level for the US Women’s National Team. She reminds me that anything is possible when you put your mind to it!”

Q: What would you tell your younger self?

A: “I would tell my younger self to keep going; keep pushing through those long, grueling training sessions; keep working on my own outside of scheduled team practices; don’t let anyone tell me that I can’t do it for any reason; and I would read these two inspiring quotes to myself every day from the legendary Mia Hamm:

“Somewhere behind the athlete you’ve become and the hours of practices and the coaches who pushed you… is a little girl who fell in love with the game and never looked back. Play for her”.

“The vision of a champion is bent over, drenched in sweat, at the point of exhaustion, when nobody else is looking.”
