Coach Spotlight: Mara Turner
At Western WA Surf, our coaches are more than just instructors—they are mentors, role models, and passionate leaders dedicated to developing young athletes both on and off the field. This month, we’re thrilled to highlight Coach Mara Turner, whose journey through soccer has shaped her into the motivated and inspiring coach she is today.
From overcoming personal challenges as a player to finding her calling in coaching, Mara brings a deep love for the game and a commitment to growth—not just for her players, but for herself as well.
From Player to Coach: A Journey Fueled by Passion
Mara’s soccer journey started at the young age of four, and from the beginning, the game just clicked. She thrived as a goal-scoring striker, playing with a fearless mindset and determination that defined her style of play. While her natural talent allowed her to excel, her journey wasn’t without challenges.
At 11, Mara joined a top-10-ranked team in Colorado, competing at an elite level. However, a toxic coaching environment led her to step away from the game for two years, unwilling to sacrifice her love for soccer. It wasn’t until her father reminded her that she could play simply for the love of the game that she found her way back, proving that passion for soccer goes beyond rankings and trophies.
Her playing career took another unexpected turn in high school when she suffered a broken femur during a match, cutting short her dreams of playing college soccer. Despite this setback, her love for the game never faded—and years later, it would lead her down a new path: coaching.

Finding Purpose Through Coaching
Mara’s coaching career began almost by chance. After moving to Washington and searching for new career opportunities, she took a role in an afterschool soccer program—a decision that changed everything.
“After just six weeks, I knew coaching was something I wanted to pursue long-term. Watching young players develop their skills, grow in character, and fall in love with the game was incredibly rewarding.”
From that moment on, Mara knew she had found her calling. Inspired by the opportunity to positively impact young athletes, she joined Western WA Surf, where she continues to build a player-first environment that fosters growth, teamwork, and confidence.
Favorite Coaching Memory
When asked about her most memorable moment as a coach, Mara didn’t hesitate—it was her 2014 Girls Premier team winning their first tournament in a high-stakes penalty shootout.
Her players were nervous, especially their goalkeeper, who was afraid of letting the team down. But instead of breaking under pressure, the girls rallied around each other, offering support and encouragement. Their goalkeeper rose to the challenge, making incredible saves and ultimately securing the win.
“It was an incredible display of growth, resilience, and teamwork—one that made the victory even more special.”
Why Western WA Surf?
For Mara, coaching at Western WA Surf isn’t just about developing players—it’s about being part of a club that truly loves the game.
“What I love about working for Western Washington Surf is their genuine passion and love for the game. This passion drives so many of their decisions, creating an environment where both players and coaches thrive.”
Beyond that, she appreciates that Surf gives its coaches a voice, allowing them to contribute to the club’s vision and direction.
“Coaches aren’t just focused on their own teams—they are involved in shaping the club as a whole, which makes being part of Western WA Surf even more rewarding.”

Advice to Her Younger Self
If she could go back in time, Mara would tell her younger self to value the wisdom and guidance of those who came before her.
“While independence is important, learning from those with more experience can help avoid unnecessary setbacks. Being open to advice and willing to learn from others can make the journey toward your goals much smoother.”
A Coach Making a Difference
Mara Turner’s journey is a powerful example of perseverance, passion, and the impact of great coaching. Whether she’s on the sidelines encouraging her players or helping them find their own love for the game, she continues to be a driving force for player development at Western WA Surf.
We are proud to have Mara as part of our coaching staff and look forward to seeing her continue to inspire the next generation of players!
