Coach Spotlight: Erin Smith

At Western Washington Surf, our coaches are more than just teachers of the game—they are mentors, role models, and champions for player development on and off the field. This month, we’re putting the spotlight on Coach Erin Smith, who brings passion, experience, and dedication to our G13 Puyallup A and Girls HS Puyallup teams, as well as our Goalkeeper Program.

A former collegiate athlete at Western Washington University, Erin’s love for the game didn’t stop when her playing career ended. Instead, it fueled a lifelong commitment to coaching. As she enters her sixth year of coaching, Erin reflects on her journey, the inspiration behind her coaching, and what she loves about being part of Western WA Surf.

From Player to Coach

Like many great coaches, Erin’s love for soccer began as a player. She grew up playing multiple sports but found her true passion on the soccer field, eventually earning a spot at WWU. When her playing days ended, she knew she wasn’t ready to step away from the game.

“I thought to myself, ‘I need to figure out how to be involved with this game every day for the rest of my life.’ I had former coaches come alongside me with encouragement and support, which opened a lot of doors for me.”

That support system inspired Erin to give back and become a coach herself.

Coaching with Purpose

For Erin, coaching isn’t just about helping players develop technical skills—it’s about celebrating their growth both on and off the field.

“Being a coach means that you are your players’ biggest cheerleader during practices and games. But what really inspires me is my players’ achievements off the field—from getting into their dream college to placing at state track or earning a role in their school musical. It’s a privilege to celebrate those victories with them.”

One of her most memorable coaching moments came while leading Bellevue Christian in the state tournament. After a hard-fought season, her team faced an opponent they had previously lost to—only to come out victorious in penalty kicks, securing a spot in the state quarterfinals.

“My assistant coach and I sprinted onto the field to celebrate with the team. It was an awesome night!”

Why Western WA Surf?

Since joining Western WA Surf, Erin has embraced the club’s commitment to player development—especially for girls in the program. She appreciates the size of the community, the resources available to players, and the emphasis on growing the girls’ side of the game.

“There are so many opportunities for players at all levels, especially for those who want to work hard and love the game. The U.S. is really spearheading girls’ participation and development in grassroots programs, and it’s amazing to see Western WA Surf championing this work.”

From coaching field players to developing goalkeepers across Tacoma and Redmond, Erin plays an essential role in ensuring that every player—no matter their position—gets the support they need to thrive.

Advice for Young Players

When asked what advice she would give her younger self, Erin’s response had little to do with soccer and everything to do with balance:

“Find a hobby that doesn’t require you to compete with anyone—something you can do just for your own enjoyment.”

Wise words from a coach who understands that soccer is just one piece of the bigger picture.
